Ingredients
6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
Topping:
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Spread evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
3. In another bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until mixture forms coarse crumbs. Stir in nuts if using.
4. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apple mixture.
5. Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, or until apples are tender and topping is golden brown.
6. Cool slightly before serving. Best enjoyed warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for best flavor.
Substitute pears or add berries for a twist.
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven to keep the topping crisp.
