Description

Spook up your Halloween with this fun and eerie Classic Bloody Spaghetti with Mozzarella Eyeballs! A delightful dish that combines savory spaghetti with a rich tomato sauce and spooky mozzarella eyeballs, perfect for a themed party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb spaghetti
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella balls (bocconcini or ciliegine)
  • 1 (2.25 oz) can black olives, sliced Red food coloring (gel or liquid) Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook spaghetti according to package directions, al dente.
  2. Drain and set aside.
  3. While spaghetti cooks, heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  4. Add chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  6. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  7. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for at least 20 minutes, or up to an hour, stirring occasionally.
  8. The longer it simmers, the richer the flavor.
  9. Season the sauce with salt and black pepper to taste.
  10. Meanwhile, prepare your mozzarella eyeballs.
  11. Take each mozzarella ball and carefully dab a tiny bit of red food coloring onto one side to create a bloodshot effect.
  12. Place a slice of black olive in the center of the colored side to act as the pupil.
  13. Once the sauce is ready, add the cooked spaghetti to the pot and toss to coat evenly with the sauce.
  14. The deep red sauce will look like “blood.”
  15. Transfer the “Bloody Spaghetti” to a large serving platter or individual plates.
  16. Carefully arrange the prepared mozzarella eyeballs on top of the spaghetti.
  17. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley and serve immediately.

Notes

For an extra gruesome effect, you can slightly warm the mozzarella eyeballs in the microwave for a few seconds right before serving, making them “melt” just a little into the Bloody Spaghetti. This Bloody Spaghetti with Mozzarella Eyeballs is a fantastic family-friendly Halloween meal!
