Ingredients
2 (9-inch) pie crusts unbaked
4 cups mixed berries (blueberries raspberries blackberries strawberries) fresh or frozen
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon unsalted butter cut into small pieces
1 egg whisked (for egg wash)
1 tablespoon coarse sugar (for topping)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
2. In a large bowl combine mixed berries sugar flour lemon juice cinnamon and nutmeg; toss gently to coat.
3. Fit one pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate; mound berry mixture into the crust.
4. Dot the berries with the small pieces of unsalted butter.
5. Place the second pie crust over the filling; trim and crimp edges to seal. Cut several slits in the top crust for steam.
6. Brush the top with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
7. Bake 15 minutes at 400°F (200°C). Reduce heat to 375°F (190°C) and bake 35–45 minutes more until the crust is golden and filling bubbles. Shield edges with foil if browning too fast.
8. Cool on a wire rack at least 2–3 hours to let the filling set before slicing.

For an extra eerie effect tint a small portion of the filling with a drop of purple gel color and swirl before topping.
