  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 1-2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2-4 tablespoons milk whole milk or half-and-half recommended

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat softened unsalted butter with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  • Gradually add sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating on low speed until combined, then increase speed and beat for 2 more minutes.
  • Pour in vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of milk, then beat on medium-high speed until smooth, creamy, and spreadable.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add remaining milk one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.
  • (Optional) For colored frosting, divide it into separate bowls and add gel food coloring until desired hue is achieved.
  • Your 1-bowl buttercream is now ready to decorate your sugar cookies.

Notes

Ensure butter is truly at room temperature for the best results. Sifting powdered sugar is crucial for a smooth frosting.
