Equipment

  • large bowl
  • large skillet
  • whisk
  • 9x13 inch baking dish

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Ground Beef 80/20 recommended
  • 1 large Onion thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 3 cups Beef Broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil or Vegetable Oil divided

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder divided
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder divided
  • Salt to taste (divided)
  • Black Pepper to taste (divided)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Gently combine ground beef with ½ teaspoon each of salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder, then divide into 8 half-inch-thick patties.

Cooking

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and sear patties for 2-3 minutes per side until browned, then remove and set aside.
  • Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil to the same skillet, sauté sliced onion for 5-7 minutes until softened and lightly caramelized, scraping up browned bits.
  • Sprinkle flour over onions, stir for 1 minute, then gradually whisk in beef broth along with Worcestershire sauce and remaining seasonings; simmer for 3-5 minutes until the gravy thickens slightly.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C), arrange seared patties in a 9x13 inch baking dish, and pour thickened gravy evenly over them.

Baking & Serving

  • Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 30-35 minutes until hamburger steaks are cooked through and tender.
  • Remove from oven and let rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, do not overmix the ground beef mixture when forming patties. The residual heat will continue cooking the steaks as they rest, ensuring they are tender and juicy. This recipe doubles well for larger gatherings; adjust baking time slightly if needed.
