Equipment

  • large bowl
  • whisk
  • rolling pin
  • baking dish

Ingredients

Dough

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Filling

  • 2 medium apples, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Dough

  • Combine all dry dough ingredients in a large bowl, then warm the milk and butter before mixing them into the dry ingredients.
  • Knead the dough until smooth and elastic (about 5-7 minutes), then place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until doubled in size.

Prepare the Filling & Assemble

  • While the dough rises, combine the diced apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl.
  • Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle (approximately 12x18 inches), then evenly sprinkle the apple cinnamon filling over the dough before rolling it up tightly from the long side and slicing it into 1 1/2-inch thick rolls.
  • Arrange the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and refrigerate overnight.

Bake & Glaze

  • The next morning, take the rolls out of the refrigerator and let them sit at room temperature for 30 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. While the rolls cool, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract for the glaze.
  • Once the rolls are slightly cooled, drizzle with the prepared glaze and serve warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the apple filling. You can also substitute part of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a healthier option.
