Equipment

  • 8x8 inch baking dish
  • Pastry blender (optional)

Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 6 medium Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice

For the Topping

  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup Rolled oats
  • 0.5 cup Brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter cold and cut into pieces

Optional Garnish

  • Vanilla ice cream for serving
  • Caramel sauce for serving

Instructions

Prepare the apples

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice; toss well to coat.

Make the topping

  • In a separate bowl, mix together flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut in the cold butter with a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Assemble and bake

  • Pour the apple mixture into an 8x8 inch baking dish. Evenly sprinkle the oat topping over the apples.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown and bubbly.

Serve

  • Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Optionally, serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Notes

For an extra crunch, you can add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts) to the topping mixture. Adjust cooking time for desired apple tenderness; some prefer their apples slightly firmer.
