Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large bowl

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound Pork sausage casings removed
  • 0.5 cup Butter
  • 2 ribs Celery finely chopped
  • 1 medium Onion finely chopped
  • 2 medium Apples peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 cups Chicken broth
  • 8 cups Dried bread cubes
  • 2 teaspoons Fresh sage minced
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat, breaking it apart with a spoon until no longer pink; drain any excess fat and set the sausage aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté chopped celery and onion until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the diced apples and cook for another 3-5 minutes until slightly tender.
  • In a large bowl, combine the dried bread cubes, cooked sausage, sautéed vegetable and apple mixture, minced sage, salt, and pepper.
  • Gradually add chicken broth to the bread mixture, tossing gently until the bread cubes are moistened.

Baking

  • Transfer the stuffing mixture into the prepared baking dish and cover with foil.
  • Bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.

Serving

  • Remove from oven and let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving hot.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of thyme or rosemary along with the sage. If you prefer a moister stuffing, you can add a bit more chicken broth during the mixing step. This dish can be prepared a day in advance and baked just before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
