  • plate
  • shallow dishes
  • heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer
  • kitchen thermometer
  • slotted spoon
  • paper towels

Ingredients

Cheese Mixture

  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 oz cream cheese softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Pinch cayenne pepper optional

Coating

  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs for coating

Frying

  • Frying oil for deep-frying (e.g., vegetable or canola oil)

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a medium bowl, combine cheddar, mozzarella, softened cream cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
  • Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined and form a cohesive mixture. Chill for 20-30 minutes if too soft.

Forming and Coating

  • Take small portions (about 1 tablespoon) of the cheese mixture and roll them into 1-inch balls.
  • Prepare two shallow dishes: one with beaten egg and milk, the other with panko breadcrumbs.
  • Dip each cheese ball in egg wash, then roll in panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently for an even coating.

Cooking and Serving

  • Heat 2-3 inches of frying oil to 350°F (175°C) in a heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer.
  • Carefully place a few cheese balls into the hot oil and fry for 2-4 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  • Remove cooked cheese balls with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • Serve the Classic Crispy Cheese Balls warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For extra crispy cheese balls, you can double-dredge by repeating the egg wash and breadcrumb steps. Ensure the oil temperature is maintained to prevent greasy cheese balls or uneven cooking. Serve immediately for best results.
