  • pastry blender or fingertips
  • foil (optional)

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 4-5 about 2 lbs medium apples such as Granny Smith, Fuji, Honeycrisp, or a mix
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed preferred
  • a pinch salt

Crisp Topping

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats not instant oats
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cubed cold
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease an 8x8 or 9x9 inch baking dish.
  • Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/4-inch thick pieces, then toss them with brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl.

Make the Topping

  • In a separate bowl, combine flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in cold cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Assemble & Bake

  • Pour the apple mixture into the baking dish and sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
  • Bake for 35-45 minutes until golden brown and bubbling; tent with foil if browning too quickly.
  • Cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of ground ginger to the apple filling. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
