Equipment

  • large bowl
  • plastic wrap
  • paper towels
  • wooden skewers
  • shallow dish or plate
  • deep pot or Dutch oven
  • kitchen thermometer
  • wire rack

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp melted butter

Filling & Coating

  • 6-8 hot dogs
  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese
  • 1.5 cups Panko breadcrumbs
  • granulated sugar for sprinkling
  • Vegetable oil for deep frying

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a bowl, combine warm milk and 1 tbsp sugar, then sprinkle yeast over it and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Add flour, salt, egg, and melted butter to the yeast mixture, then mix until a sticky dough forms.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for 30-60 minutes until it doubles in size.
  • While the dough rises, pat dry the hot dog and cheese pieces, then thread them alternately onto wooden skewers.
  • Pour Panko breadcrumbs into a shallow dish or plate to create a breading station.

Assembly & Frying

  • Once the dough has risen, lightly flour or oil your hands, then take a portion of dough and wrap it evenly around each skewered hot dog and cheese, ensuring no gaps.
  • Roll the dough-covered skewers firmly in the Panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure they stick well.
  • Heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully place 2-3 corn dogs into the hot oil and fry for 3-5 minutes, turning occasionally until golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove fried corn dogs, place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil, and immediately sprinkle generously with granulated sugar.

Serving

  • Serve the hot corn dogs immediately with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

For extra crunch, ensure the Panko breadcrumbs are firmly pressed onto the dough. You can adjust the hot dog and cheese combination on the skewers to your preference. Be careful when handling hot oil!
