Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • small bowl
  • whisk
  • small saucepan
  • sharp knife

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 12 slider buns or dinner rolls
  • 1 lb thinly sliced deli roast beef
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Butter Mixture

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Au Jus

  • 3 cups beef broth or consommé
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder optional
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp cold water, optional, for thickening au jus

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Slice the slider rolls horizontally through the middle, keeping them attached, and place the bottom halves in the baking dish.

Assembly

  • Layer roast beef evenly over the bottom rolls, then top with provolone cheese.
  • Place the top halves of the rolls back onto the layered fillings.

Flavor and Bake

  • Whisk together melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder; brush generously over the tops of the rolls.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 15 minutes, then remove foil and bake for another 5-10 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Prepare Au Jus

  • While baking, combine beef broth and optional onion powder in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer.
  • For a thicker au jus, whisk in the cornstarch slurry and simmer for 1-2 minutes until desired consistency is reached.

Serve

  • After baking, slice the French Dip Squares into individual servings and serve immediately with the warm au jus for dipping.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can lightly toast the interior of the buns before adding the fillings. If you don't have slider buns, regular dinner rolls work just as well. Customize the cheese with your favorite melting varieties like Swiss or mozzarella. The au jus can be made ahead of time and gently reheated. Be careful not to overbake, as the buns can become dry.
