  • 1 lb breakfast sausage cooked and crumbled
  • 6 stale bread cubed
  • 1 ½ shredded cheddar cheese divided
  • 8 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ cup chopped bell pepper or onion Optional

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Evenly scatter the cooked sausage, cubed bread, and optional bell pepper or onion in the prepared baking dish.
  • Sprinkle 1 cup of cheddar cheese over the sausage and bread mixture.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.
  • Pour the egg mixture over the ingredients in the baking dish, gently pressing down any bread to ensure it absorbs the liquid.
  • Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of cheddar cheese over the top of the casserole.
  • Cover the dish and refrigerate overnight or for at least 4 hours to allow the flavors to meld.

Baking and Serving

  • When ready to bake, uncover the casserole and bake for 45-55 minutes until the center is set and golden brown.
  • Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.
