Basic Sugar Cookie Preparation

  • Beat in the egg until just combined, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients on low speed, mixing until just combined; do not overmix, as the dough will be soft.
  • Divide the basic dough into portions for your desired flavor variations.

Adding Your Flavor Twists (Choose 1 or more!)

  • Lightly knead the chosen flavor addition into each dough portion until evenly distributed.
  • For lemon zest, add 1 tablespoon finely grated lemon zest.
  • For orange zest, add 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest.

Chill Dough (Optional but Recommended)

  • Wrap each flavored dough portion in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 days.

Rolling and Baking

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out one dough portion at a time to about ¼-inch thickness, then cut out shapes with cookie cutters and re-roll scraps as needed.
  • Transfer cut-out cookies to prepared baking sheets, leaving 1 inch between them, and bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are lightly golden and centers are just set.
  • Cool cookies on baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Optional Glaze (If Using)

  • In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk (or flavored juice), and optional vanilla extract until smooth, adjusting milk for a pourable consistency.
  • Once cookies are completely cool, dip tops into the glaze or drizzle it over them, allowing the glaze to set before stacking.

Notes

For best results, do not overmix the dough. Chilling the dough helps prevent spreading and ensures crisper cookies. Get creative with your flavor combinations and glazes!
