For the Fudgy Brownie Base:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), melted
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup caramel sauce warmed (for swirling)

For the Apple Pie Filling:

  • 3 cups Honeycrisp apples diced (about 2 medium apples)
  • ¼ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 ½ tablespoons cornstarch

For the Buttery Pecan Streusel Topping:

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup cold unsalted butter cut into small pieces
  • ½ cup chopped pecans

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, ensuring an overhang for easy removal.
  • In a large bowl, whisk melted butter and granulated sugar, then whisk in eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and salt; gradually add to the wet ingredients until just combined, then fold in chocolate chips.
  • Spread about two-thirds of the prepared brownie batter evenly into the lined baking dish.
  • Combine diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch in a medium bowl, tossing gently to coat the apples.
  • For the streusel, combine flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon in another medium bowl; cut in cold butter until coarse crumbs form, then stir in chopped pecans.
  • Spoon the apple filling over the brownie batter, dollop the remaining brownie batter on top, gently spreading, then drizzle and swirl warmed caramel sauce.
  • Generously sprinkle the pecan streusel topping over the entire surface of the bars.
  • Bake for 45-55 minutes until the edges are set, the streusel is golden, and a toothpick inserted into the brownie comes out with moist crumbs.

Cooling

  • Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before lifting and slicing into squares.

Notes

Do not overmix the brownie batter to ensure a fudgy texture. Allow the bars to cool completely before slicing for clean cuts and to prevent crumbling.
