Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Whisk
  • Medium bowl
  • Electric mixer (or stand mixer)
  • Trifle bowl (or deep glass bowl)
  • Plastic wrap

Ingredients

Pudding Base

  • 1 box (3.4 oz) instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 2 cups whole milk

Cream Cheese Swirl

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

Assembly

  • 1 large box (12 oz) vanilla wafers
  • 4-5 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/4 cup chopped toasted pecans optional, for garnish

Instructions

Pudding Preparation

  • Whisk together the instant vanilla pudding mix and whole milk in a large bowl until thickened, then chill in the refrigerator.
  • Beat softened cream cheese and powdered sugar in a separate bowl until smooth and creamy.

Cream Mixture

  • In a chilled bowl, beat heavy cream until soft peaks form, then gradually add sweetened condensed milk until stiff peaks form.
  • Gently fold half of the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture, reserving the other half for layering.

Assembly

  • Begin assembly in a trifle bowl with a layer of vanilla wafers, breaking them if needed.
  • Arrange a single layer of sliced bananas over the wafers.
  • Spoon half of the chilled vanilla pudding over the bananas.
  • Add dollops of the cream cheese and whipped cream mixture over the pudding, gently spreading as needed.
  • Drizzle some caramel sauce generously over this layer.
  • Repeat layers with vanilla wafers, bananas, remaining vanilla pudding, and the rest of the cream cheese mixture.
  • Finish with a generous layer of the reserved plain whipped cream on top.
  • Optionally, sprinkle chopped toasted pecans over the whipped cream for garnish.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld and wafers to soften.

Notes

For best results, prepare the trifle the day before serving to allow ample time for chilling and for the flavors to fully develop. Ensure all dairy ingredients are well-chilled before starting, especially the heavy cream, for optimal whipping results. Use ripe but firm bananas to prevent them from becoming too mushy in the trifle, and slice them just before assembly to minimize browning.
