Main Ingredients

  • 8-10 slices stale sourdough bread cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 lb cooked breakfast sausage crumbled
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup diced bell peppers sautéed
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions sautéed

Instructions

Preparation

  • Sprinkle sausage, cheese, bell peppers, and onions over the bread cubes.
  • Whisk together eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder in a large bowl.
  • Pour the egg mixture over the ingredients in the baking dish, ensuring all bread is moistened.

Chilling & Baking

  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or preferably overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and let casserole sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes.
  • Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until golden brown and set; a knife inserted should come out clean.

Serving

  • Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For best results, prepare the casserole the night before and let it chill overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the bread to fully absorb the egg mixture.
