  • medium saucepan
  • whisk
  • small bowl
  • knife

Ingredients

For the Brownies

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

For the Pumpkin Swirl

  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin puree

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

For Garnish (Optional)

  • pecans, chopped for garnish

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on two sides.
  • Melt unsalted butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat; then remove from heat and whisk in both sugars until combined.
  • Whisk in eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix wet and dry ingredients.

Assembly

  • Pour half of the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together pumpkin puree, softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, egg yolk, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla extract.
  • Drop spoonfuls of the pumpkin mixture and remaining brownie batter over the surface; then swirl gently with a knife to create a marbled effect and sprinkle with chocolate chips and pecans, if desired.

Baking

  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs. Let cool completely before slicing and serving.

Notes

For extra festive brownies, add a pinch of cinnamon to the brownie batter. Ensure cream cheese is properly softened to avoid lumps in the pumpkin swirl. Do not overbake to maintain a fudgy texture. Store brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
