Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Large skillet
  • Large bowl
  • 9x13 inch baking dish

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 loaf day-old bread, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 ribs celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh sage, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped
  • 2 cups chicken or turkey broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups cooked turkey, shredded (optional)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast for 10-15 minutes until lightly golden and dry.
  • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and celery and cook for 5-7 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in fresh sage, thyme, and rosemary; cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Assembly and Baking

  • In a large bowl, combine toasted bread cubes and cooked vegetable mixture. If using, add shredded cooked turkey.
  • Pour in chicken or turkey broth, salt, and pepper, mixing gently until bread cubes are moistened.
  • Transfer mixture to a 9x13 inch baking dish. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until golden brown and heated through.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of red pepper flakes to the vegetables or a splash of white wine to the broth. You can also prepare the stuffing ahead of time and bake it just before serving. If preparing ahead, cover and refrigerate, then add an extra 10-15 minutes to baking time if baking from cold.
