Casserole

  • 1 loaf thick-sliced bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Topping

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish and spread the bread cubes evenly in it.
  • Whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a bowl and pour over bread, ensuring all cubes are coated.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Baking

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and remove casserole from refrigerator.
  • Mix flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon for the topping; cut in cold butter until crumbly and sprinkle over the casserole.
  • Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until golden brown and set in the center. Serve warm with desired toppings.

Notes

For best results, allow the casserole to soak overnight. You can also add fresh berries or a drizzle of maple syrup after baking.
