Casserole

  • 1 loaf thick-sliced bread such as challah or brioche, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk whole or 2%
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • pinch of salt

Topping

  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish and spread the bread cubes evenly in it.
  • Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Pour the egg mixture over the bread, ensuring all pieces are soaked, then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Baking

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare the topping by mixing melted butter, brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon.
  • Remove casserole from the fridge, sprinkle the topping evenly over the bread, and bake for 40-50 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let it cool slightly before serving, optionally topped with syrup or fresh fruit.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a splash of orange juice or Grand Marnier to the egg mixture. You can also add berries or sliced bananas layered with the bread cubes before pouring the egg mixture.
