  • 1.5 lbs Lean Ground Turkey ~680g
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 Onion medium, diced
  • 3 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 Bell Pepper large, any color, diced
  • 14.5 oz Canned Diced Tomatoes 411g can, undrained
  • 1/2 cup Chicken or Vegetable Broth
  • 1 tbsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tsp Dried Oregano
  • Salt to taste
  • Black Pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Smoked Paprika Optional
  • 1/4 tsp Red Pepper Flakes Optional, or more

Cooking Steps

  • Heat a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat and add olive oil.
  • Sauté diced onion and bell pepper for 5-7 minutes until softened, then add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  • Push vegetables to one side, add ground turkey, break it up, and cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes.
  • Combine turkey and vegetables, drain excess fat, then stir in chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper; cook for 1 minute.
  • Pour in undrained diced tomatoes and broth, bring to a simmer, then reduce heat, cover, and cook for 10-15 minutes to meld flavors.
  • Remove from heat, taste, and adjust seasonings as needed.

Notes

This base is incredibly versatile and can be used in tacos, burritos, pasta dishes, or served over rice or quinoa. Adjust spice levels to your preference, and feel free to add other vegetables like corn or black beans for more bulk and nutrients.
