Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter with an electric mixer until it is light and fluffy, which should take about 2 minutes.
  • Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition until it is fully incorporated and the mixture becomes thick.
  • With the mixer on low speed, gradually beat in 2 tablespoons of milk, the vanilla extract, and the pinch of salt.
  • Continue beating until the frosting is smooth and creamy.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add additional milk, one teaspoon at a time, beating well after each addition, until you reach the desired consistency.
  • If the frosting becomes too thin, add more sifted powdered sugar, one tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is achieved.
  • Use the frosting immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, cookies, or other desserts.

Notes

For best results, ensure your butter is truly softened to room temperature before you begin. Adjust the amount of milk or powdered sugar gradually to achieve your preferred frosting consistency; a thicker frosting is great for piping, while a thinner one works well for spreading.
