  • 1 small yellow onion
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger grated
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce

  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes optional, for heat
  • 1/2 cup canned water chestnuts drained and chopped

  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro
  • 2 tbsp crushed roasted peanuts

Instructions

Cooking Instructions

  • Heat sesame oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat and cook ground beef until browned, draining excess fat.
  • Add diced onion, then stir in minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking until fragrant.
  • Whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, lime juice, and red pepper flakes, then pour over the beef mixture and combine well.
  • Fold in chopped water chestnuts and cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens, then remove from heat.
  • Arrange lettuce leaves on a platter and spoon the warm beef mixture into them.
  • Garnish with green onions, cilantro, and crushed peanuts, serving immediately for guests to build their own wraps.

Notes

For an extra kick, add a pinch more red pepper flakes to the sauce. Serving with a side of sriracha or sweet chili sauce is also a great option for those who enjoy more heat. Ensure your butter lettuce or Bibb lettuce leaves are well-chilled and crisp for the best texture contrast with the warm beef filling.
