Equipment

  • Medium Bowl
  • Large Skillet or Cast-Iron Pan
  • Foil

Ingredients

For the Steak

  • 1 pound flank steak or skirt steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For the Shrimp

  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Pinch cayenne pepper optional, for heat

For Assembly

  • 12-16 small corn or flour tortillas
  • taco toppings e.g., shredded cabbage, diced onion, fresh cilantro, crumbled cotija cheese, pico de gallo, avocado crema, lime wedges

Instructions

Marinate the Steak

  • Combine sliced steak with olive oil, minced garlic, lime juice, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper in a bowl. Toss to coat well, then cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours.

Prepare the Shrimp

  • In a separate bowl, toss shrimp with olive oil, minced garlic, smoked paprika, salt, and optional cayenne pepper. Set aside.

Cook the Steak

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add steak in a single layer and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until browned, then remove and tent with foil to keep warm.

Cook the Shrimp

  • In the same skillet, cook the seasoned shrimp for 2-3 minutes per side until pink and opaque, being careful not to overcook.

Warm the Tortillas

  • Warm tortillas by microwaving them in a damp paper towel for 30-60 seconds, or heating them over a gas flame or in a dry skillet until pliable.

Assemble the Tacos

  • Lay out warm tortillas, divide steak and shrimp among them, and top with your favorite garnishes. Serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, marinate the steak overnight. Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking the steak and shrimp to ensure a good sear. Adjust the cayenne pepper to your preferred spice level. These tacos are best served fresh, so have all your toppings ready before cooking.
