Equipment

  • Small Star-shaped Cookie Cutter
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Sharp knife or pizza cutter

Ingredients

Main

  • 2 sheets/rolls Puff Pastry or Pizza Dough
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter melted
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup Chopped Pecans or Walnuts optional
  • 1/4 cup Dried Cranberries or Raisins optional
  • 1 Egg beaten For egg wash

For Icing

  • 1/2 cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1-2 tbsp Milk or Lemon Juice For icing

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out one sheet of puff pastry or pizza dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Brush the melted butter over the dough, leaving a small border. Mix granulated sugar and cinnamon in a bowl, then sprinkle over the buttered dough. Add chopped nuts and dried fruits if desired.
  • Place the second sheet of dough on top, aligning the edges.
  • Cut the dough into a large triangle shape to form the Christmas tree, reserving the trimmed edges.
  • Cut 1-inch wide horizontal strips from each side of the triangle, keeping an uncut trunk down the middle.
  • Twist each strip a few times, working your way up the tree.
  • Use a small star cookie cutter to cut a star from the reserved dough scraps and place it at the top of the tree.
  • Brush the entire tree with the beaten egg.
  • Bake for 18-25 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  • While baking, whisk powdered sugar with milk or lemon juice for the icing. Drizzle over the slightly cooled tree and serve warm.

Notes

For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg to the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Make sure to not overcrowd your baking sheet, as the puff pastry will expand quite a bit. If you don't have a star cookie cutter, you can freehand cut a star shape from the dough scraps.
